Unless you’re sat in a new Gesture Chair from Steelcase, possibly not.
Here at Paramount, we like to keep on top of the latest trends in modern office furniture and this really caught our eye. Steelcase’s Gesture Chair is the first office chair designed specifically to support the way that people interact with new mobile technology. Steelcase conducted a global posture study in 11 countries, observing 2000 people in a wide range of postures, and uncovered nine new postures as a result of the way that people use tablets, smartphones and other mobile devices.
They studied how the human body interacts with technologies and how it responds as workers shift from one device to another. Research revealed that, if not adequately addressed, the way that chairs are currently designed could cause pain and discomfort for workers. This video gives you a bit more insight into the design story behind the Gesture.
Steelcase looked at the unique movements and gestures of the body and reflected these in the design of the various parts of the chair.
- The back and seat move with each user to provide continuous and persistent support.
- The back cradles the user no matter the posture.
- The arms move like human arms, allowing users to be supported in any position, whether texting on a smartphone, typing on a keyboard or swiping a tablet.
- The seat is flexible at the perimeter bringing comfort all the way to the edges, allowing users to sit in a range of postures.
Inspired by the human body, Gesture was created for the way we work today. So if you’re not sitting comfortably, now you know what might be causing it.
